After Week 16 the playoff picture is starting to heat up on both sides. The Eagles upset loss against the Commanders, the Lions, and the Vikings’ in Week 18 matchup might decide the division with home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. On the AFC side of things, Kansas City needs one win to lock up the one seed, while the division race heats up between the Ravens and Steelers with two games left. The Bengals have a glimmer of hope and need to defeat the Broncos this week to officially become frisky. Let’s take a look at how every team comes in on Blitz Sports Media’s weekly power rankings.
1. Kansas City Chiefs 14-1 (+3)
The Chiefs played one of their best games of the season with their win over the Texans on Saturday. Marquise Brown’s debut opened the passing game up for the Chiefs offense and will continue to see his involvement increase. Getting the ball out of Mahomes hands quickly on a bum ankle worked well and I expect them to have a similar gameplan against the Steelers this week. Defensively the first half was shaky but they locked in after halftime with another stout performance. The magic number is down to one and a win over the Steelers today would mean we won’t see the Chiefs starters for two weeks.
2. Buffalo Bills 12-3 (-)
The Bills were able to grind out a sloppy win over the Patriots to keep the race for the one seed within their grasp. At some point they were bound to have a bad day on offense and that happened Sunday. More concerningly Josh Allen suffered an elbow injury that will be something to monitor this week. Defensively Drake Maye had his way with this secondary at times. The Bills are a clear-cut top contender to dethrone the Chiefs but their defensive concerns are growing as of late.
3. Detroit Lions 13-2 (-)
Detroit is a machine right now and maintains its spot as the number one seed. The Lions’ offense jumped up on the Bears quickly ending the game before the second quarter even started. Jahmyr Gibbs had a dominant performance as the lead back while Jameson Williams had a monster day. Jared Goff had another great performance and might finish within the top five of the MVP race this year. Defensively they struggled against Caleb Williams and might struggle this week with the 49ers.
4. Minnesota Vikings 13-2 (+1)
The Vikings are knocking on the heels of Detroit as they keep finding different ways to win. As of late it has been Sam Darnold taking over games and their win against Seattle was from a 4th quarter game-winning drive. Matching up with Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison every game is a nightmare for defensive coordinators. As I am with the two teams ahead of them, their defense is concerning. They stop the run well and pass rush well but their secondary continues to get cooked every week. Their season will be defined by how they play in the next two games against the Packers and Lions.
5. Philadelphia Eagles 12-3 (-4)
The Eagles are at a crossroads after their loss to the Commanders. Jalen Hurts availability is in question after he suffered a concussion. Ultimately Kenny Pickett played well enough for them to win this ball game but the defense fell apart in the 4th quarter. I keep talking about how my biggest concern is the coaching staff and it let this team down in the 4th quarter at times Sunday. Ultimately I feel like this game is more of a bump in the road compared to a season-altering loss.
6. Green Bay Packers 10-4 (-)
The Packers embarrassed the Saints forcing the first shutout of the season. The offense was led by a dominant rushing attack and continued to use Jordan Love as a secondary option. Defensively they are starting to click. They have an elite run defense paired with an opportunistic secondary that can create some problems in the playoffs. They are a sneaky contender to come out of the NFC this season if the passing offense can turn it on come January.
7. Baltimore Ravens 10-5 (-)
The Ravens secured a playoff spot with a gritty win over the Steelers but still need help to clinch the AFC North. Winning their final two games against Houston and Cleveland seems achievable, while Pittsburgh faces tougher opponents in Kansas City and Cincinnati. Even if Baltimore doesn’t take the division, they remain a dangerous playoff matchup with their physicality and experience. Derrick Henry’s recent rushing dominance further highlights their relentless offensive style.
8. Los Angeles Rams 9-6 (+1)
The Rams continue to find ways to win with their defense in the last two weeks while the offense has stalled out. The offense has relied heavily on Kyren Williams and not on their elite passing game to beat teams which could bode well in the postseason. The Rams are showing that they can win low-scoring games with their defense ability to win a shootout with their talent on offense. The Rams are becoming a sneaky dark horse to make a playoff run as long as they take care of business the last two weeks.
9. Pittsburgh Steelers 10-5 (-1)
The Steelers‘ playoff hopes took a hit with a costly loss to the Ravens, shifting them into a chasing role for the AFC North crown. Injuries and inconsistency on both sides of the ball have exposed vulnerabilities, as Russell Wilson’s turnovers proved decisive. Pittsburgh faces a challenging close to the season against the Chiefs and Bengals, both capable of testing their defense. If they can’t tighten up, their postseason prospects could hinge on external outcomes.
10. Washington Commanders 10-5 (+4)
The Commanders made a statement with their win over the Eagles. Jayden Daniels shredded the hottest defense in the NFL with five touchdown passes and proved he can beat a top defense. Olamide Zaccheaus has stepped up as the wide receiver two and can be a valuable asset come postseason time. The defense has some work to do, as the Eagles had their way despite Jalen Hurts leaving in the first quarter. The Commanders still have a strong chance of being a one-and-done this postseason.
11. Denver Broncos 9-6 (-1)
The Broncos dropped to the AFC’s seventh playoff spot after a disappointing loss to the Chargers, marked by conservative play-calling and defensive breakdowns. Their offense faltered after a strong start, and poor tackling plagued the defense. Crucial matchups against the Bengals and Chiefs will determine their postseason fate, with little room for error. To secure a playoff berth, Denver must find consistency on both sides of the ball.
12. Houston Texans 9-6 (-1)
The Texans suffered a devastating loss to Kansas City, compounded by season-ending injuries to Tank Dell, Jimmie Ward, and Shaq Mason. These absences leave critical holes in the offensive line and secondary, straining an already inconsistent team. C.J. Stroud’s recent play has fallen short of earlier highs, putting more pressure on Nico Collins and the remaining playmakers. Houston’s resilience will be tested as they attempt to rally for a playoff push.
13. Los Angeles Chargers 9-6 (-)
The Chargers showcased creativity and resilience in their win over the Broncos, with Justin Herbert’s leadership and a rare fair-catch free kick standing out. While the defense showed improvement late in the game, consistency remains a concern. A favorable matchup against New England offers a chance to solidify their form, though they’ll need to remain cautious. Rookie Ladd McConkey’s breakout adds promise to an offense that’s still finding its rhythm.
14. Tampa Bay Buccaneers 8-7 (-2)
What a disappointing performance from the Buccaneers when they had a chance to maintain the NFC South lead. The offensive line was bullied by Dallas’s pass rush and gave Baker Mayfield no chance against a weak Cowboys secondary. Defensively they got smoked by the Cowboys’ intermediate passing game without Antoine Winfield Jr. and had a dominant performance against Rico Dowdle. The Buccaneers are going to need some help to win out to get into the postseason.
15. Cincinnati Bengals 7-8 (+2)
The Bengals have defied the odds, rebounding from 4-8 with three straight wins to stay in the playoff race. Key players like rookie Amarius Mims have stepped up, though his recent injury could be a setback. Cincinnati’s final games against the Broncos and Steelers offer a chance to shake up the AFC standings further. Their late-season surge has been fueled by intensity and drama, keeping them alive in the postseason hunt.
16. Seattle Seahawks 8-7 (-1)
The Seahawks continue to slide and allow the Rams to gain momentum before their matchup next week. Seattle is now in a must-win situation against the Bears this week barring a Rams loss. The offense played well against a tough Vikings defense but defensively they did not hold up when they needed to in the 4th quarter. The Seahawks have a good young core that inspires a strong future ahead in Seattle despite 2024 likely ending in them missing the playoffs.
17. Atlanta Falcons 8-7 (+3)
The Falcons are off to a solid start in the Michael Penix era allowing him to ease into things with a dominant defensive performance over the Giants. Penix played well and was efficient in his opportunities. Kyle Pitts forced his lone interception and is proving to be a bust with his poor play. The Falcons now lead the NFC South and might be able to win it with an upset win over the Commanders this week.
18. Dallas Cowboys 7-8 (+3)
The Cowboys continue to play hard despite being out of contention potentially saving Mike McCarthy’s job. Cooper Rush has filled in nicely for Dak Prescott and has proved he is a solid backup in the league. The defense is what has been most impressive during the last month. The pass rush is back with improved play from young players throughout the unit. The Cowboys are truly stuck in mediocrity with a failed chance at a high pick this season but the improved play of the young players is encouraging for 2025.
19. Miami Dolphins 7-8 (-)
The Dolphins relied on Jonnu Smith, De’Von Achane, and Tyreek Hill to outlast the 49ers, with Jason Sanders sealing the win with five field goals. Despite missing Jaylen Waddle, Miami’s adaptability has helped them stay competitive, though missed opportunities continue to linger. While their playoff hopes are slim, they’ve played better football of late and could finish strong. Their ability to find contributors in key moments has been crucial this season.
20. Arizona Cardinals 7-8 (-4)
The Cardinals are officially out of playoff contention and the questions have begun for their 2025 outlook. Drew Petzing has done a poor job of utilizing his start rookie receiver while Kyler Murray has failed to improve. Petzing should be gone and an improved offensive line will be important heading into next season. Defensively they played poorly this week but have shown signs of potential this season.
21. San Francisco 49ers 6-9 (-3)
The 49ers 2024 season hit an all-time low against the Dolphins. There was no rhythm on offense all day as they went 5/13 on 3rd down and had 374 total yards but only walked away with 17 points. Defensively, the Dolphins ran all over them and they need to address their nose tackles in 2025. This is a lost season for San Francisco and losing out is not a bad thing for them by being able to get an elite asset in the draft.
22. Indianapolis Colts 6-8 (-3)
Jonathan Taylor powered the Colts with a 218-yard performance, but defensive lapses allowed the Titans to turn a blowout into a close contest. Anthony Richardson’s slow start was offset by a clutch late-game throw to Michael Pittman Jr. that sealed the victory. Despite the win, the Colts’ inconsistency raises questions about their ability to compete in tougher matchups. Cleaning up execution will be key as they push for a playoff berth.
23. Carolina Panthers 4-11 (+2)
The Panthers finally got over the hump and were able to win a game. Bryce Young and Chuba Hubbard were spectacular in this one allowing them to jump out early and never look back. Defensively they almost blew it again allowing the Cardinals to match them score for score. They are multiple additions away from the defense being better but offensively there is some hope for 2025.
24. New York Jets 4-11 (-1)
The Jets opened their game against the Rams with a brilliant 99-yard touchdown drive led by Aaron Rodgers, but their offense fizzled afterward, scoring only three more points despite never punting. Turnovers missed opportunities, and questionable calls by interim coach Jeff Ulbrich highlighted their struggles, including a failed fourth-down attempt from their 33-yard line. Costly errors like a muffed punt and missed field goal late in the game sealed their fate. The team’s lack of execution and situational awareness continues to hinder its ability to finish games.
25. New Orleans Saints 5-10 (-1)
The Saints had one of the worst performances of the season against the Packers. The roster is beat up with injuries on the offensive side of the ball and it has given us a clear look at Spencer Rattler who is not an NFL QB. Defensively I’m more concerned, they have so many veterans who are past their primes and are locked in long-term. With dead cap already they won’t be able to move off these players without taking a blow next season putting them in a horrible spot long-term.
26. Chicago Bears 4-11 (-)
The Bears are one of the worst first-quarter teams I’ve ever watched. The Bears were down 20-0 quickly in this one ending the game before it got started. Caleb Williams had a nice performance and unfortunately, their top wide receiver Keenan Allen might be gone this offseason. The Bears need a culture change badly with this team showing no fight at all despite a talented roster.
27. New England Patriots 3-12 (+1)
The Patriots played aggressively and hung tough against the Bills, with rookie QB Drake Maye showing flashes of brilliance while surpassing Josh Allen’s rookie passing stats. However, turnovers and missed opportunities, including a costly Maye interception in the end zone, doomed their chances. Despite solid defensive work hemming in Allen, familiar breakdowns hurt the team’s momentum. Maye’s promise bodes well for the future, but the team’s inability to sustain complete games remains a glaring issue.
28. Cleveland Browns 3-12 (-1)
Dorian Thompson-Robinson’s first start of the season ended in disaster as Cleveland’s offense struggled mightily against Cincinnati, with DTR under constant pressure and failing to spark any production. Myles Garrett’s milestone of 100 career sacks was a bright spot, but the defense’s strong effort wasn’t enough to compensate for the lackluster quarterback play. With Deshaun Watson set to return, the Browns’ QB issues remain a daunting challenge moving forward. The loss encapsulated another frustrating chapter in Cleveland’s inconsistent season.
29. Las Vegas Raiders 3-12 (+3)
The Raiders snapped a lengthy losing streak with a win over the Jaguars, fueled by Aidan O’Connell’s solid performance and Brock Bowers’ continued excellence as a rookie tight end. While the victory was satisfying, it may cost them better draft positioning, adding intrigue to their future quarterback situation. Bowers’ emergence offers a bright spot, but the team’s failure to draft a top rookie QB last year could haunt them. The focus now shifts to whether O’Connell or another QB can stabilize the position next season.
30. Jacksonville Jaguars 3-12 (-1)
Mac Jones put up decent stats in the loss to the Raiders but continued to display frustrating tendencies, including throwing short on crucial downs. Brian Thomas Jr. remains a bright spot, showcasing elite talent despite the team’s offensive struggles. Injuries have plagued Jacksonville all season, further hampering their competitiveness, even as they’ve shown slight improvement since their Week 12 bye. With a 1-3 record in that stretch, the Jaguars face questions about their direction moving forward.
31. Tennessee Titans 3-12 (-1)
The Titans showed resilience by nearly pulling off a historic comeback against the Colts but were undone by their league-high turnover total, including three interceptions by Mason Rudolph. After surrendering 38 unanswered points, Tennessee clawed back with 23 of their own, only to fall short in the final moments. The fight they showed reflects well on coach Brian Callahan, but the mistakes and giveaways have defined their season. The team’s effort is commendable, but execution remains their Achilles’ heel.
32. New York Giants 2-13 (-1)
I’m gonna keep this short and sweet. The Giants are the worst team in football by a wide margin but continue to stay on course for the number one pick. Getting that number-one pick ultimately gives them a chance to be in contention next year with some high-end talent on the roster.
