Miami Vice: Miami Dolphins Season Preview

The Miami Dolphins have one of the league’s most dynamic offenses, with the sheer speed on that side of the ball. The team has the league’s most prolific receiving duo in Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle, paired with the fastest running back duo in the NFL between Raheem Mostert and De’Von Achane. With Mike McDaniel calling the plays, the sky is the limit. The questions on offense lie between the Quarterback and the Offensive Line. The OL since 2021 ranked last, 24th and 31st in pass block win rate. As for Tua, the numbers thrive in the first half of the season. However, since 2022 when Miami acquired Hill, Tua has a record of 3-8 in December and January, including an embarrassing effort against the Kansas City Chiefs in his inaugural playoff performance this past January.

On the defense, the Dolphins had a solid unit that was battered by injuries at the end of the season. Both of their best pass rushers in Bradley Chubb and Jaelan Phillips suffered season ending injuries towards the back half of the regular season. The defense lost their interior force in Christian Wilkins (Raiders) in the offseason, in addition to Andrew Van Ginkel (Vikings), Xavien Howard and Raekwon Davis (Colts).

The Dolphins did draft one of the more underrated prospects in Penn State DE Chop Robinson, who has elite speed off the edge. Veteran DBs Kendall Fuller and Jordan Poyer were brought on in Free Agency, as well as Linebacker Jordyn Brooks from Seattle. On offense, Odell Beckham Jr comes over from the Ravens, for his fourth team in four years.

Ultimately, the Dolphins will go as far as Tua leads them. With the weapons and the coaching, as well as a defense that will at least be league average, year five falls on Tua’s shoulders. As Hill reaches the age of 30, and Tua stands as one of the highest-paid signal callers, the pressure is on.

Schedule

The Dolphins face off against a playoff opponent 7 times in the 2024 season, including twice against their division rival Bills, who they can’t get over the hump against to this point. Only two of these matchups are in Miami, however, and in December they see the Jets, Texans, 49ers and Browns in a month that recently has been a struggle for Miami.

Final Record: 8-9 (3rd in AFC East)

The Dolphins, even with all of that speed, will falter down the stretch the same way they have the past few years. When the weather gets colder, so does Miami’s high octane offense and Quarterback. With questions along the O-Line and across the board on defense, the Dolphins will miss the playoffs for the first time since 2021.
