The 2024 fantasy football season has officially come to a close and has led us to the second edition of our awards series voted on by you guys each day. Today’s article will be about all of the biggest busts from the 2024 fantasy football season. The candidates up for the biggest bust include Patrick Mahomes, Breece Hall, Tyreek Hill, Deebo Samuel, Travis Etienne, C.J. Stroud, Anthony Richardson, Dalton Kincaid, and Cooper Kupp. Below are each candidate’s statistical breakdowns and a summary of their 2024 season with the voting poll at the bottom of the document to determine the winner. All Awards will be announced before Saturday’s playoff game.
NOTE: No players who suffered season-ending injuries after only playing a handful of games (Christian McCaffrey) will be included in this list. These are players who were healthy for the majority of the season but failed to live up to expectations making them a bust.
Bust Candidates
Patrick Mahomes QB KC
Preseason ADP: 29.0
Points Per Game: 18.3
Position Rank: QB11
Stats: 3928 Passing Yards, 26 Touchdowns, 11 Interceptions, 307 Rushing Yards, 2 Rushing Touchdowns
Summary: Patrick Mahomes ended the season strong after a slow start. Ultimately, he was drafted in the third round of drafts with the expectation of a positive touchdown regression that never materialized. The Chiefs’ offense dealt with injuries and bad offensive line play that prevented Mahomes from putting up the numbers needed to be fantasy-relevant with no rushing upside. His late surge allowed him to finish as the QB10 before resting in Week 18.
Breece Hall RB NYJ
Preseason ADP: 5.4
Points Per Game: 15.1
Position Rank: RB16
Stats: 209 Carries, 876 Rushing Yards, 5 Rushing Touchdowns, 57 Catches, 483 Receiving Yards, 3 Receiving Touchdowns
Summary: Breece Hall was one of the most frustrating players in fantasy football this season with his inconsistent performances this year. Hall was inefficient and played in a bad Jets offense that never lived up to the preseason hype. Hall’s breakout performances in 2023 skyrocketed his draft stock into the first round but he finished as the RB16 this year. I would not be surprised to see Hall still have a third-round grade in 2025 drafts.
Tyreek Hill WR MIA
Preseason ADP: 3.2
Points Per Game: 12.8
Position Rank: WR18
Stats: 81 Catches, 959 Receiving Yards, 6 Receiving Touchdowns
Summary: Tyreek Hill dealt with a wrist injury all season while dealing with Tua Tagovailoa being in and out of the starting lineup all season. Without Tua, he saw a significant dip in production this season and even with Tua healthy he never returned to form. Hill only averaged 12.8 points per game this season which is nowhere near his average draft position within the top three. He will still be one of the most coveted players in the second round in next year’s fantasy drafts.
Deebo Samuel WR SF
Preseason ADP: 32.0
Points Per Game: 10.2
Position Rank: WR44
Stats: 51 Catches, 670 Yards, 3 Receiving Touchdowns, 42 Carries, 136 Rushing Yards, 1 Touchdown
Summary: Deebo Samuel lost all of his explosive abilities with the ball in his hands this season resulting in a down year with only 4 touchdowns. His ability to run effectively has declined while he is never open due to him being a poor separator. He averaged 10.2 points per game and finished as the WR44 this season, a far cry from his ADP of 32. Samuel also might have played his last down as a 49er and will likely have a new home in 2025.
Travis Etienne RB JAX
Preseason ADP: 17.4
Points Per Game: 8.7
Position Rank: RB35
Stats: 150 Carries, 558 Rushing Yards, 2 Touchdowns, 39 Catches, 254 Receiving Yards
Summary: Travis Etienne might have the strongest argument of the bunch for the biggest bust of the 2024 fantasy football season. Etienne averaged 8.7 points per game and lost his early-down work to Tank Bigsby this season. We drafted him in the second round expecting a similar role to last season on a solid offense but that never materialized this season. Ultimately, Etienne finished as the RB35 and could have been dropped halfway through the season.
C.J. Stroud QB HOU
Preseason ADP: 50.5
Points Per Game: 13.7
Position Rank: QB18
Stats: 3727 Passing Yards, 20 Touchdowns, 12 Interceptions, 52 Carries, 233 Rushing Yards
Summary: C.J. Stroud might be the biggest bust of them all with his brutal season behind a bad offensive line and multiple injuries in the offense. Stroud rarely put up 20-point performances this season and only averaged 13.7 points per game, one of the lowest marks among starting quarterbacks. He was drafted in the beginning of the fifth round with the expectation that he would be in for a big year with the Texans’ offseason additions. Ultimately Stroud shows that drafting a quarterback with little rushing upside that early is risky.
Marvin Harrison Jr. WR ARI
Preseason ADP: 16.8
Points Per Game: 11.6
Position Rank: WR30
Stats: 62 Catches, 885 Receiving Yards, 8 Touchdowns
Summary: Marvin Harrison Jr. did not have as bad of a rookie season as many expected finishing with 62 catches for 885 receiving yards and 8 touchdowns. The problem is where we were drafting him. We draft Harrison in the second round of drafts expecting him to have monster volume this season with the only other consistent target being Trey McBride. Instead, he finished as a WR3 this season and will likely come as a discount in 2025 drafts.
Anthony Richardson QB IND
Preseason ADP: 57.6
Points Per Game: 15.9
Position Rank: QB25
Stats: 1814 Passing Yards, 8 Passing Touchdowns, 12 Interceptions, 86 Carries, 499 Rushing Yards, and 6 Rushing Touchdowns
Summary: Anthony Richardson made headlines this season from historically low completion percentages and tapping out of a game for a break. Richardson threw more interceptions than touchdown passes and was benched in the middle of the season for Joe Flacco. Despite having six rushing touchdowns, it was not enough for him to overcome a brutal season through the air. Richardson was a bust this year finishing as the QB25 despite being picked in the fifth round.
Dalton Kincaid TE BUF
Preseason ADP: 53.6
Points Per Game: 7.8
Position Rank: TE30
Stats: 44 Catches, 448 Receiving Yards, and 2 Touchdowns
Summary: Dalton Kincaid never lived up to the preseason hype of filling in as Josh Allen’s top target in 2024 making him a bust. Kincaid dealt with injuries and middling production all season, which led to him finishing as the TE30 this year despite being drafted in the 5th round of drafts. He taught us a valuable lesson this year that Josh Allen’s tight ends will never be one of the top producers at their position.
Cooper Kupp WR LAR
Preseason ADP: 34.8
Points Per Game: 14.6
Position Rank: WR38
Stats: 67 Catches, 710 Receiving Yards, 6 Touchdowns
Summary: Cooper Kupp’s season was headlined by early injuries and a brutal stretch in the fantasy football playoffs. Not many people remember that in the middle of the season, Kupp rattled off multiple big performances encouraging people on his outlook for the rest of the season. Instead, Kupp became a non-factor in the Rams offense leading to zero performances over 10 points in his final four games. Kupp was drafted in the late third round this offseason and finished as a WR4 this season. Expect Kupp’s draft stock to take a significant hit in 2025.
