Matthew Stafford and the Fountain of Youth
The Los Angeles Rams and QB Matthew Stafford defeated the Buffalo Bills and MVP front-runner Josh Allen in a week 14 shootout that will be in consideration for Game of the Year.
The game was in full supply of excitement and numbers
- 48 points were scored in the 2nd half alone
- 6 total touchdowns by Josh Allen
- 0 turnovers from either team
- 38 minutes in time of possession for the Rams
- 1 team lead the entire game
- 124.1 combined passer rating
- 902 total yards
The most impressive number of the game though is undoubtedly 36. That’s the age of Matthew Stafford, who many thought was washed and should retire amongst offseason rumors of Sean McVay doing the same.
On Sunday, it looked like flashbacks of Stafford running around, slinging the ball all over the field in the service of his hopeless Detroit Lions. It didn’t look like the QB who is 8th all-time taking 502 sacks during his career. It sure didn’t look like someone who is considering hanging it up.
Stafford went off to the tune of 320 yards and 2 TDs making countless ridiculous throws like this one to his two all-world receivers Cooper Kupp and Puka Nacua..
Stafford looked young, full of energy, and as healthy as ever. The NFC West is still within plenty of reach for the LA Rams and it looks to me like Stafford is ready to go out and claim it.
Let’s Savor These Final Weeks
Week 14 is behind us now and it brings a sad realization – football season is quickly coming to an end. We’re hearing throughout the week who has or can clinch playoffs and about the teams who have been eliminated. A lot of the player awards are virtually decided (more on that later this week..) and the “in the hunt” seeding charts are all over our TVs.
Sure, the playoffs are exciting but it also means the beginning of the end for us football fanatics. It hit me in full force on Sunday night when the impossible happened. A Major League Baseball headline crept into our feeds on a full slate of NFL action..
The MLB Winter Meetings are happening which means baseball is gearing up for its return. Don’t get me wrong, I love a night at Camden Yards watching Gunnar Henderson crank dingers, but I’m just not ready for that yet.
Some of the football is very bad. Injured or benched QBs make for some pretty sloppy games (looking at you JAX@TEN), but we need to savor it while we have it. In about 8 months we’ll all be watching, posting on X, and reading about how great it is to finally see some NFL action again – that action being the always underwhelming Hall of Fame Game.
Let’s lock in and enjoy these final weeks like we’ll never see another football game again. It truly is the most wonderful time of the year.
