Michigan’s Long-Term Concerns Following Loss to Washington

It feels like a generation ago that Michigan won a National title. JJ McCarthy feels like a Quarterback our parents told us about while growing up. Blake Corum feels like he played in the days before the forward pass was invented. And to make matters worse, it appears we’ve returned to the dark ages of Michigan Football.

But I believe the pain is far from over.

There’s No QB of the Future for Michigan

Speaking of JJ McCarthy, it appears that the Top-10 Draft pick and greatest Michigan QB of All-Time will be missed more than we figured.

Through the first half of the year, one thing has become apparent; there isn’t a D1 Quarterback on this roster. So far Michigan has played a lesser JJ look alike, a glorified RB, and a player who moves more like a turtle than a Tuttle. None of them have got the job done.

Next in line is former 5-Star Jadyn Davis, although the coaching staff seems reluctant to give him any playing time thus far. Perhaps it’s because they don’t want to ruin his young talent.

Or perhaps it’s because he’s not any better than what’s already on the field.

Whatever the case may be, there doesn’t seem to be a short-term solution to the QB problem, let alone for the future.

The Defense is Losing All Star-Power

This was supposed to be the best defense in all of College Football. Instead, it may not even crack the top-25. The scary thought? It’s losing every elite player next season.

Will Johnson? Gone. Mason Graham? Gone. Kenneth Grant? Adios. The very foundation of this defense will be heading to the NFL season. As every part of this defense not named is seen as a weakness, this is cause for concern.

Martindale, if he continues to coach past this season, will be a liability. His “Nick” for blitzing has been partially restrained due to the pressure Michigan is able to generate by just a four-man front. Take that away and it becomes an entirely different story.

How Concerned Should Michigan Fans be?

Very.

Sherrone Moore has yet to show he can make the necessary adjustments to compete. Michigan has been horrible in the second half this season, a trend that only continued against Washington. If Moore doesn’t show us something soon, the Maize and Blue will only grow wearier.
