What to Make of the Savion Hiter Buzz for Michigan

The University of Michigan has a long, storied history of great running backs. From Tim Biakabutuka to Mike Hart, to more recently Hassan Haskins and Blake Corum, there’s been no shortage of RB talent in Ann Arbor. It appears that tradition will continue with the #1 Running Back in the 2026 Class, Savion Hiter.

In a recent interview with Steve Wiltfong of On3 Sports, the former director of recruiting of 247Sports, Savion told Wiltfong that Michigan was his top school. It comes as no surprise that Michigan leads his recruitment, as Tony Alford has been on an absolute tear in recruiting recently.

Per his On3 profile, Hiter runs an 11.11 in the 100-meter dash, along with a 45-foot triple jump. In his freshman season, he ran for 1,526 yards and 24 touchdowns, averaging 11.7 yards per carry. He is a two-way player.

What Would Savion Hiter Mean for Michigan?

Savion Hiter would be the highest-ranked back for Michigan since Donaven Edwards, one of the most talented Running backs in the country. Hiter has tremendous upside and has the potential to be one of the best RB recruits in the last decade, or potentially since Derrick Henry.

Hiter would revolutionize the running game for Michigan, as well as provide a balance to the high profile of Bryce Underwood. It would make for one of the best tandems of a QB and RB in modern history. If Michigan can close out this recruitment quickly, it can provide a spark for the 2026 recruiting class as well as the future.

I’ve personally predicted Michigan to land Hiter as long as 9 months ago when the prospect was just taking the national landscape. I accredited this to the hiring of Tony Alford, otherwise, we could be having a completely different conversation about which Big Ten school Hiter will play at.

I believe that the recent hype and surge for Michigan in Savion Hiter’s recruitment is a mix of Tony Alford’s persistence and Bryce Underwood’s commitment. Imagine yourself as a recruit, the #1 RB in the country, and a 5-star on every major site. You get offered to play at the most storied program in College Football history. But you’re worried about the immediate future of this team. Enter Alford and Underwood. You have the best coach in the game and the best Quarterback possibly in program history. Why wouldn’t you want to go to Michigan?
