Why NDSU Should Be the Next FBS Team

When it comes to College Football Dynasties, the first program to come to mind is Alabama. But at the FCS level, one team has been far more dominant. That team is North Dakota State.

The D Means Dominance

No college football program has dominated the 21st century like NDSU. The Bison have won nine FCS national championships since 2011, a feat unmatched by any other program at that level. Their 39-game winning streak from 2017 to 2021, which included three consecutive titles, further highlights the hold NDSU holds on their division.

Additionally, NDSU has consistently produced NFL-caliber talent, with several players making successful transitions to the professional level, something unheard of for an FCS program.

NFL Production

Among those to be drafted from North Dakota State are household names such as Carson Wentz and Trey Lance. Both were Top-3 Picks, going to the Eagles and 49ers respectively.

In the 2017 season, Wentz proceeded to live up to the Draft hype. In just his second year, he led the Eagles to an 11-2 record before suffering a season-ending ACL injury in Week 14. He threw for 3,296 yards and 33 touchdowns to 7 interceptions. Wentz’s ability to extend plays with his legs and his poise under pressure made him a MVP candidate until his ACL injury. Even though he wouldn’t be able to finish the season, his leadership led the Eagles to an outstanding 13-3 record and eventual Super Bowl Title.

NDSU Is Ready For the Next Step

The Bison have established themselves as the Alabama-type power of the FCS level. They’ve proven their stability and prowess over the previous decades with Championship Dominance and NFL production that rivals the rest of their division combined.

With the recent shake-ups that conference realignment has offered, there has never been a better time for NDSU to make the move. Not only would it bring in more cash flow but brand exposure as well. For the Bison to not become a forgotten program, they must make the leap to the next level. Their level of accomplishment might not correlate, but with time they could become a playoff contender.
